For residents of Somita and nearby villages, Monday was no ordinary day. The 9th Senegalese Detachment of ECOMIG troops arrived at the Somita Community Clinic with doctors, nurses, and medicines—bringing free healthcare directly to the community.
The outreach, supported by medical teams from the 4 Infantry Battalion in Kanilai and Bwiam General Hospital, was more than just a medical exercise. For many villagers, it was a lifeline.
Dr. Amadou Fall of the Senegalese Army explained that the initiative is part of an annual effort to reach rural communities often cut off from hospitals.
“Some communities are far from healthcare facilities. That is why every year we select a village and provide free medical services,” he said.
This year, Somita was chosen. Over 77 patients—men, women, and children—were attended to. Many were diagnosed with hypertension and diabetes, while others received treatment for common illnesses.
For Isatou Sowe, the Community Health Nurse in charge of Somita Clinic, the day marked a turning point.
“This is the first time such an outreach has been held here. It will greatly support residents of Somita and surrounding villages. We are thankful to the ECOMIG forces,” she said.
The gratitude was echoed by beneficiaries. Antuwan Sanyang, who traveled from Kandong village, brought his mother suffering from high blood pressure.
“Accessing healthcare is very difficult for us in Kandong. When I heard about the free outreach, I knew I had to bring my mother. This service is a blessing,” he shared.
Nyima Sanyang, a resident of Somita, described the initiative as transformative.
“Healthcare has been brought to our doorsteps. Not only Somita benefited, but neighboring communities too. We hope the medical team continues to visit regularly,” she urged.
For the people of Somita, the outreach was more than medicine—it was reassurance that they are not forgotten. It was a reminder that even in rural corners, healthcare can be made accessible, and that partnerships between communities and peacekeeping forces can bring tangible change.
