The National Council for Civic Education (NCCE), with support from the EU‑UNDP GREAT Initiative, has commenced a nationwide sensitization campaign under the theme “Informed Citizens: The Pillar of Credible Elections and Resilient Democracy.” The initiative, launched on Sunday, 9th August 2026, is aimed at preparing Gambians for the upcoming December 5 Presidential Election by promoting civic responsibility, tolerance, and adherence to electoral codes of conduct.
The campaign focuses on key thematic areas, including the importance of credible elections, electoral codes of conduct, civic rights and responsibilities, and the role of political tolerance in sustaining peace. Sessions held across various communities concluded with a unified emphasis on democracy as enshrined in the 1997 Constitution, reaffirming that sovereignty resides in the people and that elections remain the primary avenue through which citizens exercise this power.
The sensitization drive has already reached communities in Niamina Dankunku (CRR) and Nyamanar & Misiraba Mariama (URR).
On Monday, 10th August 2026, the NCCE extended its outreach to Kulari and Dingiri (URR) and Kerr Malima and Jareng (CRR), focusing on the importance of citizens’ participation in elections and how active involvement strengthens democracy and good governance.
Community leaders welcomed the initiative. The Alkalo of Jareng, Alasan Ceesay, praised the timeliness of the engagement, stressing that sensitization helps citizens understand the value of participating in elections and adhering to the electoral code of conduct, thereby contributing to a peaceful and credible 2026 Presidential Election.
Similarly, Kandeh Waggeh of Dingiri cautioned against rising tribal discrimination in political discourse, urging Gambians to reject tribalism, protect national unity, and actively participate in elections, including the upcoming LGA and NAM polls.
Throughout the sessions, community members engaged in discussions, shared perspectives, and deepened their understanding of why every vote matters. The NCCE renewed its clarion call for eligible voters to actively participate in the upcoming elections, uphold peace and tolerance, and contribute to a credible, transparent, and inclusive electoral process.
