Building on the momentum of the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the National Food Security Processing and Marketing Corporation (NFSPMC) and SOSOLASO, the Corporation has intensified efforts to strengthen market access for Gambian farmers.
Earlier this week, NFSPMC teams visited Ndemban, Foni in the West Coast Region to oversee the sorting, packaging, and purchase of locally produced onions directly from farmers. This initiative marks a significant step toward creating reliable markets, reducing post-harvest losses, and supporting sustainable agricultural production.
For years, Gambian farmers have faced serious challenges in accessing structured markets. Many struggle with post-harvest losses due to inadequate storage and distribution facilities, while unstable prices in informal markets leave them vulnerable to middlemen. Poor road infrastructure and limited transport options restrict their ability to move produce to urban centers. Farmers often have weak bargaining power when selling individually, and the dominance of imported food products undermines local production and incomes. In addition, limited access to affordable finance prevents many from expanding production or meeting market standards.
NFSPMC’s onion marketing program is part of a broader strategy to directly address these challenges and expand into multiple agricultural value chains. In recent months, the Corporation has:
- Launched groundnut purchasing schemes to stabilize farmer incomes and ensure consistent supply for local processors.
- Facilitated rice marketing initiatives aimed at reducing import dependency and promoting self-sufficiency in staple food production.
- Introduced storage and processing facilities to minimize waste and enhance the quality of locally produced crops.
- Partnered with farmer cooperatives to provide training on packaging, quality standards, and market readiness.
These efforts reflect NFSPMC’s growing commitment to empowering Gambian farmers, strengthening food security, and fostering economic resilience. By working closely with stakeholders across the agricultural sector, the Corporation is positioning The Gambia to achieve greater self-reliance in food production and marketing.
