Authorities across Europe and Africa reported significant migrant movements over recent weeks, underscoring the continued risks and resilience of irregular migration across both the Mediterranean and Atlantic routes.
Mediterranean Operations – Spain
Between Friday, May 29, and Sunday, May 31, Spanish maritime services intercepted 358 migrants attempting to reach the Balearic Islands. Most of the passengers were of North African origin, with several identified as Sub-Saharan migrants.
- Friday, May 29: Six boats carrying 91 migrants were located in Balearic waters.
- Saturday, May 30: A small vessel with five passengers was rescued at 5:40 a.m., followed by 31 migrants of Sub-Saharan origin near Cabrera Island. Later that morning, two boats carrying 15 migrants each were spotted off Formentera, and another 24 people were rescued nine miles south of Cabrera.
- Sunday, May 31: Additional arrivals brought the total to 358 migrants intercepted over the three-day period.
Atlantic Operations – Senegal
In Casamance, Senegal, security forces intercepted a suspected migrant boat carrying 35 people during a weekend operation targeting irregular migration.
The group included 30 Senegalese nationals, three Ghanaians, and two Gambians, who had boarded a canoe at the fishing dock in Elinkine around 2:00 a.m. intending to attempt the perilous sea journey toward Europe.
Authorities seized large quantities of fuel, a boat engine, a GPS device, and other equipment believed to have been prepared for the voyage. All 35 migrants were arrested and handed over to investigators as Senegalese authorities continue efforts to dismantle smuggling networks along the Atlantic route.
West Coast Operations – The Gambia
On June 2, 2026, the Gambia Immigration Department (GID), working with the Spanish Guardia Civil, intercepted 126 would-be migrants across the coastal communities of Lamin, Tujereng, and Westfield.
The group comprised 73 Guineans, 22 Malians, 30 Senegalese, and one Burkinabe national, including 37 males, 32 females, and 61 minors. Authorities emphasized that the operation was part of ongoing collaboration to disrupt clandestine migration and prevent smugglers from using the Gambia as a launch pad to the Canary Islands.
Safe Arrival – Greece
Separately, on April 27, 2026, a group of migrants safely arrived in Greece after departing from Tobruk, Libya. According to reports, all passengers were in good condition following the journey.
The group included South Sudanese nationals along with people of other nationalities. Their safe arrival was welcomed by observers, with Libya Mission noting.
Broader Context
These interceptions and arrivals highlight the multi-directional nature of migration flows:
- The Mediterranean route remains heavily monitored yet active.
- The Atlantic route from West Africa continues to attract migrants despite its dangers.
- Safe arrivals, such as in Greece, show that some journeys succeed, though risks remain high.
At the policy level, the EU’s 2026 migration strategy emphasizes deterrence, border security, and returns, while African governments stress migration’s developmental benefits, remittances, and diaspora engagement. This divergence continues to challenge cooperation between the two regions.
