Farmers in the North Bank Region (NBR) of The Gambia have raised concerns over the government’s delayance in setting good prices for the forthcoming groundnut trade season.
As the groundnut season reaches its peak period, farmers have harvested their groundnuts and are now waiting for the government’s price determination, for the global market.
Mr. Adama Ndow, a renowned farmer in Kerr Ma Demba Kunda Village, Upper Niumi District in NBR, while speaking to this medium, lamented that the delay in the new groundnut trade season might negatively impact on the farmers, thus affecting their economic livelihood.
The rural farmer opined that the “government’s reluctance” to determine the price, as well as commence this year’s groundnut Trade season, would prompt the farmer folk to sell their groundnuts to the middlemen or export it to Senegal, at their own set-prices.
Mr. Ndow used this medium to appeal to the Gambian leader, H.E. Adama Barrow to intervene in tackling the groundnut trade industry, in a bid to avoid further delays.
Also speaking to Mansa Banko Online was Abdoulie Saye, a farmer. He’s concerned that the late start of the groundnut trade season might affect the timely payment of cash for their groundnuts sold at the seccos.
