One of the country’s GSM operators Africell, a private company, has on Friday, 27 September, 2019 launched a product called E-SIM or the electronic sim card.
The aim is to get rid of physical sim, and get along with electronic sim card; virtually the electronic sim is not a sim that can be inserted on mobile phones, but rather is by programming it on your I-Phone XS XR, and XRMAX.
By typing in your details just like if you need a new physical sim card, the electronic sim card could also be changed or replaced in case you lost it, if you wish to do so.
Mr. Musa Sise, Director of Corporate Affairs, said that customers, from now on, need not carry physical sim with them. But they could use this new service, which is being launched for the first time, not only in the Gambia, but also in the entire West Africa.
“We are at sixty-five percent when it comes to telecommunications industry in the Gambia,” in Sise’s words, adding that they are always at the top also when it comes to coming up with a new product in telecommunications industry.
‘’We are operating in three other countries, namely Uganda, Congo and Sierra Leone; but this is first time we launching this service,” said Mr.Hussain Diab, Director of Operations. He pointed out that travelers too could also use this service as there are no charges attached to it.
The GSM giant, Africell, first came to the Gambia in 2001, and presently, they have scored sixty (60) percent when it comes to telecommunications industry according to officials at the company.
