The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST) has convened a landmark validation workshop to review two draft regulatory frameworks designed to transform The Gambia’s tertiary and higher education sector. The workshop, held today, brought together representatives from government, academia, civil society, the private sector, and development partners.

Opening the session, Honourable Professor Pierre Gomez, Minister of Higher Education, described the gathering as a significant milestone in advancing education reform. He emphasized that the draft regulations—focused on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and Gender Equality, Equity and Inclusion—will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of skills development and inclusive education in the country.

The proposed TVET Regulations are aligned with the National TVET Policy (2021–2030) and seek to strengthen coordination, teacher training, curriculum relevance, and internship opportunities. They also aim to expand access for vulnerable groups, including women, persons with disabilities, and marginalized communities.

Meanwhile, the Gender Equality, Equity and Inclusion Regulations are designed to institutionalize gender-responsive planning and accountability across higher education institutions. Key measures include the establishment of Gender and Inclusion Units, affirmative action to boost female participation in STEM and TVET programmes, mentorship initiatives, gender-sensitive facilities, and financial support for underrepresented groups.

Minister Gomez underscored the importance of stakeholder ownership, urging participants to provide constructive feedback to refine the draft documents before their finalisation and enactment.

“Collaboration is key. These frameworks will only succeed if all stakeholders take ownership and contribute meaningfully to their implementation,” he said.

The workshop continues with technical sessions and consultations aimed at strengthening the regulations, ensuring they reflect the needs of communities and align with national development priorities. MoHERST reaffirmed its commitment to building a responsive, inclusive, and competitive higher education sector that empowers Gambians for the future.
