The Gambian government has raised concern over what it describes as misinformation and politically motivated narratives circulating on social media about governance, corruption, and recent electricity supply challenges.
In a statement, officials acknowledged the frustration of citizens affected by intermittent power shortages but said some groups were exploiting the situation to spread falsehoods and undermine public confidence.
The government stressed its commitment to transparency and accountability, urging that allegations of corruption be handled through credible institutions and evidence-based processes rather than “reckless speculation.”
Authorities noted that current electricity constraints are being addressed through investments and regional energy cooperation, particularly within the OMVG framework. They highlighted progress under President Adama Barrow, citing expanded electricity access, improved generation capacity, and modernization of infrastructure.
Officials said the country had experienced one of its most stable electricity supply periods in recent history over the past year and described the current disruptions as temporary technical challenges.
The government called on political actors, media platforms, and activists to exercise restraint and responsibility in public commentary, warning that politicizing national challenges for partisan gain does not serve the public interest.
Efforts are ongoing to stabilize electricity supply and strengthen service delivery, the statement added, encouraging citizens to rely on official channels for accurate information.
