The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST), in partnership with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) and the University of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology (USET), has launched a transformative Capacity Building Workshop on Empowering Girls in STEM and TVET Through Mentorship.
The workshop brings together USET staff, alumni, gender and disability focal points, and senior ministry officials to strengthen institutional capacity for gender-responsive mentorship. The goal: to boost girls’ participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
Opening the event, MoHERST Gender Focal Point Ms. Kumba Jammeh emphasized the critical role of structured mentorship in breaking down barriers and addressing gender disparities. She called for sustained collaboration, institutional commitment, and targeted support to empower girls through leadership development, skills enhancement, and guidance.
Day One set the stage with interactive sessions exploring challenges that hinder girls’ access and success in STEM and TVET. Participants examined practical strategies for creating inclusive learning environments, while highlighting the importance of role models, strong institutional support, and tailored mentorship programs to inspire confidence and motivation among female students.
The day concluded with reflections and commitments to implement a mentorship toolkit designed to ensure sustainable and impactful initiatives.
