The Gambia’s ambitious RISE Project has reached another milestone, as a World Bank mission wrapped up a successful visit to review progress on programs transforming lives across the country.

Nafa Cash Transfer Expansion

The Nafa program has completed its second expansion, covering 16 districts and delivering four cycles of cash transfers. Preparations are now underway for a third expansion to the Kombos, Kanifing Municipality, and Banjul, which will bring nationwide coverage. Urban families will soon benefit from cash transfers delivered through E-money, combined with Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC).

Positive Playful Parenting Growth

The Positive Playful Parenting initiative has scaled up dramatically. From its beginnings in 32 pilot communities in Nianija, it now reaches 225 communities in six districts and an additional 396 communities in thirteen districts. Parents are adopting better practices, children are experiencing stronger early learning, and communities are embracing toy-making and ownership of child development. In the first quarter of 2026, coaching and mentoring sessions were held in 180 communities.

Field Visits in Foni

During visits to Sitanunku, Bambara, and Kampassa, the World Bank team observed the impact of the Productive Economic Inclusion program. Village Savings and Loan Associations showed strong commitment to savings, IPC networks remained resilient even after graduating from Nafa, and PPP facilitators impressed with their delivery skills.

Leadership Reflections

Director General, NaNA, Mr. Malang N. Fofana, described the mission as “timely” as his agency leads Nafa’s nationwide expansion. Director Fatou Gibba of the Department of Community Development praised women’s participation and encouraged greater male involvement in parenting. Mr. Ousman Dem, Director of SBCC, highlighted how combining cash transfers with SBCC strengthens household resilience and child development.

Conclusion

The mission confirmed that integrating cash transfers, parenting support, and economic inclusion is delivering real impact. Vulnerable families across The Gambia are not only surviving but building stronger, more resilient futures.
