Nioro Jattaba Farmers in Dire Need of Support as Road Damage Hampers Access to Farms

Just one month into the rainy season, farmers in Nioro Jattaba village are grappling with a severe crisis that threatens their livelihoods. Heavy downpours last week caused two vital access bridges leading to different farming zones to collapse, leaving the community in distress.

The road damage has created a compounded nightmare for the predominantly subsistence farmers, who heavily rely on the seasonal rainfall to cultivate crops for food and income. With the bridges gone, hundreds of farmers face the daunting challenge of crossing deep gully erosions to access their farms or transport vital farming tools.

Our reporter on the scene witnessed the hazardous conditions farmers are confronting daily. Crossing the treacherous gully erosions is dangerous and extremely difficult, making it almost impossible for them to sustain their farming activities. The collapse of these fragile bridges could have led to a disastrous situation if they had occurred during usage.

Mr. Hamadi Jobe, a concerned farmer, expressed his frustration, stating that the time it takes for a farmer to reach the farm has multiplied significantly due to the inaccessible roads. For some, the lack of access roads to their farms has become an early sign of potential failure in the season.

Mr. Jabel Bah, speaking on behalf of the Nioro Jattaba Alkalo, urgently called on the government, particularly the Ministry of Agriculture, to provide immediate assistance to rescue the farmers in their village. He warmly welcomed non-governmental organisations and individuals willing to offer their support in this dire situation.

Supporting the hardworking farmers of Nioro Jattaba will boost their commitment to regain access to their farms, ensuring their crops can flourish once more.
