Officials of the Gambia Bankers Association (GBA) were on Tuesday 14th April at State House in Bajul to present a cheque for D3 million, meant for the ongoing battle against the deadly coronavirus disease, otherwise COVI-19 in the country.
The country’s Number 2, Dr. Isatou Touray, in receiving the financial gesture, first and foremost expressed her profound gratitude, on behalf of President Adama Barrow, in receiving the GBA at State House in respect to the said donation.
Describing the gesture as a giant contribution towards the fight against Covid-19, Vice President Touray extended the president’s “total appreciation” over the donated amount of money towards the fight against the deadly virus that has posed threat to the whole world. She said that was just the beginning of many contributions that they were expecting to see and “we appreciate this great gesture”; as she noted that no country or government could do it alone.
“We are very much appreciative of the contribution rendered by the Gambia Bankers Association and we will continue to create the conducive environment for the private sector to operate in this country,” the VP remarked.
The President of the GBA who doubles as the Managing Director of Access Bank in Gambia, Mr. Ayo Kunle, said inter alia, “We want to appreciate the government of The Gambia for all the work that they are doing to keep the land safe.” The senior bank official informed that they have recognized the Gambian leader’s efforts and appreciated what the government is doing. And that, as member of the private sector, particularly banks, they couldn’t keep quiet and see things going on…,”therefore, we come together as an association to support and partner with government to fight the pandemic. We will continue to support the efforts of the government, and of course, with Central Bank of The Gambia to make so that Covid-19 is chased out of the Gambia”.
The Bankers Association’s head reassured government that they would continue to compliment its development agenda.The presentation was witnessed by Cabinet Ministers, Governor of Central Bank of The Gambia; and Accountant General, among other members of the Ministerial Covid-19 Committee.
