As The Gambia prepares for two pivotal national elections—the presidential vote on December 5, 2026, and parliamentary elections on April 10, 2027—an international initiative has been launched to safeguard peace and credibility in the electoral process.

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) has announced a Consultative Dialogue on Peaceful and Credible Elections, to be held on October 1, 2026, at the African Princess Hotel. The dialogue will be led by H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, serving as Eminent Person, and supported by three nationally respected Moral Guarantors: the President of the Supreme Islamic Council, the President of the Christian Council, and a senior civil society representative.

The mission, part of International IDEA’s project “Promoting Peaceful, Inclusive, and Credible Presidential and Parliamentary Elections in The Gambia”, aims to foster inclusive consultations among political parties, civil society, and key electoral stakeholders. Central to the discussions will be the development of a Peace Pact, designed to ensure issue-based campaigning and prevent electoral violence.

The invitation underscores the critical role of civil society organizations, the media, traditional authorities, and members of the National Assembly in shaping public discourse. Groups such as the Gambia Press Union, TANGO, ActionAid, Peace Ambassadors, and the National Youth Parliament are among the diverse stakeholders invited to contribute.

“Your voice is essential to this process. You can play a distinct and vital role in promoting transparency, citizen engagement, community-level peacebuilding, and accountability in the electoral process,” wrote Jainaba Faye, Head of Office and Programme Manager at International IDEA – The Gambia.

With The Gambia’s democratic consolidation under global watch, the dialogue represents a proactive step toward ensuring that the upcoming elections are not only competitive but also peaceful and credible. Observers note that the involvement of both religious leaders and civil society reflects a deliberate effort to build consensus across the country’s diverse social fabric.
