The National Roads Authority (NRA) has taken decisive steps to tackle deteriorating road conditions in the North Bank Region (NBR), signing two major maintenance contracts on Tuesday, June 2, 2026. The agreements, awarded to Smateq Construction and Pinnacle Group JV Heritage Holdings, aim to restore accessibility in Kuntaya and Banni Village—two communities that have long struggled with stormwater damage and poor road infrastructure.

Under the contracts, Pinnacle Group JV Heritage Holdings will construct the Kuntaya Triple Cell Culverts, while Smateq Construction will deliver the Five Cell Culverts project in Banni Village. Both interventions are expected to ease travel difficulties for residents and commuters, ensuring safer passage to workplaces, schools, markets, and health facilities.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, NRA Managing Director Sulayman Sumareh Janneh praised the contractors for their proven track records and professionalism. He emphasized that the projects are not just about infrastructure, but about improving lives.

“Sometimes people underestimate the importance of such projects without realizing the impact they have on the lives of ordinary people. These maintenances are vital for people travelling to work, schools, markets and health facilities,” Janneh said.

He noted that heavy stormwater flows have often left the affected areas inaccessible, disrupting economic and social activities. The new culverts, he explained, will provide lasting solutions to these challenges.

Janneh urged the contractors to uphold the same commitment and professionalism that earned them the contracts, stressing the importance of timely and effective execution. He reaffirmed the NRA’s dedication to strengthening road connectivity nationwide, ensuring safer and more reliable transport infrastructure for all communities.

The projects mark another milestone in the NRA’s mission to enhance mobility and support economic growth by addressing critical road infrastructure needs across The Gambia.
