Madam Fatma Tambedou, who served as an accountant at the Media Academy for Journalism and Communication (MAJaC) for two years, has retired.
Tambedou worked at MAJaC from 2017 to December 2019 and is credited with contributing significantly to the growth of the journalism training center within a very short period in her capacity as a financial records manager.
Prior to her redeployment to MAJaC, a journalism academy owned by the Gambia Press Union (GPU), Tambedou, with over 40 years of accounting experience, handled administrative and financial activities at the GPU for nine years.
She saw the Press Union through the most difficult period under the dictatorship of Yahya Jammeh when its leaders and other journalists faced jail time, torture, disappearances, and killings.
“I will always be available whenever you need my advice. I wish you well. I wish to hear from you (the management) about your continued growth,” she said while handing over to the new MAJaC accountant, Omar Cham, at a ceremony held on June 4, 2020 at MAJaC premises in Bakau New Town attended by four staff and the President of the GPU.
Tambedou said it was a pleasure to work with a committed staff and that leaving MAJaC was a difficult choice she made. “I didn’t want to leave, but it was time for me to take a rest,” she said in an emotional tone.
She planned on retiring a year earlier, but the Academy still needed her service. “For three years, we have been guided by her financial accounting wisdom and we are grateful for that,” Sang Mendy, Managing Director of MAJaC, said.
MAJaC’s Director of Training, Demba Kandeh, said the management would love to learn from Tambedou’s continued guidance while thanking her profoundly for her services.
Sheriff Bojang Jr, President of GPU, said Tambedou was dedicated to both the GPU and MAJaC. She served the union during the toughest times and also went on to contribute to the growth of MAJaC, he said while welcoming the appointment of the new accountant.
