The Public Service Commission (PSC) has disclosed to members of the National Assembly’s Public Enterprise Committee (PEC) that a total of Five hundred and fifty-six (556) public servants had been dismissed from the public service.
This was during the presentation of its activity reports for the years 2017, 2018 and 2019, respectively, for consideration and adoption by the lawmakers.
This, according to the Commission, indicates a decline from 2,797 in 2017 to 556 in 2019, and also represents a decline of 80 percent.
“The unprecedented rate increase in dismissal in 2017 was as a result of the Nationwide Staff Audit, which accounted for 2,772 absentees workers (ghost workers)”, the PEC members heard.
The PSC further reported that the said exercise has saved the government an amount of Ten million four hundred and forty-five thousand dalasi, six hundred and twelve dalasi and sixty six bututs (10,445,612.76), (according to the 2017 nationwide staff audit report).
“In 2019, the rate of study leave with salary increased from 1,141 in 2017 to 1,247 in 2019, which represents a 9 percent rise in capacity building. It should be noted that efforts are being strengthened to retain the trained staff upon completion, through entering in surety bond with government, with title deeds and introducing incentive packages, such as 50 percent rise in salary and allowances”, stated PSC.
The lawmakers were also informed that transfer of service stood at 82; this rose to 142 in 2018, and it further surged to 156 in 2019. This, as explicated by the PSC, implies that the rate of transfer or people leaving central government increased during the period under review.
PSC seeks to ensure that persons that meet the criteria for jobs are employed, trained, rewarded and disciplined in an open, fair and impartial manner.
It also aims to make optimal use of the competence, skills and qualifications available in the country in general, and the civil service in particular, and to advise and support government policy formulation on civil service recruitment, development and discipline.
