The death of one of the most promising young man has been announced in various communication platforms and it was indeed shocking and sad for many, especially those who knew, knows and interacted with him over the years in various capacities.
Abdou Jatta, came to light through his engagement in human rights activities or advocacy, especially for children and youth, which earned him respect across the country and beyond as affirmed in his relationship with series of right activist at domestic and international level, including Unicef on matters of child rights.
He represented The Gambia at different forums across the globe under the sponsorship and supervision of different organisations, speaking on behalf of children and youth and the need to have space for them in all sectors of our development.
He participated in the organisation and development of different platforms, meant to get the rights of children and youth where it ought to be and such included formation of Young People in Media among others.
The Young People in Media came at a time when the country was going through one of the brutal regimes of our time under the Jammeh era, but with perseverance, vision, passion for the job, the platform made its presence felt across the country and beyond, as affirmed in organisation of different media related activities for children and youth of diverse background.
My relationship with [him] started when I was working at the closed Daily Observer Newspaper, where he was coordinating a column dedicated to the cited Young People in Media, which served as a spring board for horning their skills in effective writings of different subject matters, especially those affecting children and youth.
We do exchange a lot of ideas on different issues, especially human rights advocacy at domestic and international level, as both of us have strong passion for human rights advocacy, which greatly inspired my legal studies at LLB, BL and now Masters in Intellectual Property Law.
In essence, The Gambia lost another great son of the land and we could only pray for Allah, The Almighty to grant him eternal peace and we hope the Jatta Family of Bakau New Town, take the fortitude for the lost of their dear son.
