A senior Wildlife Conservation Officer at the Department of Parks and Wildlife, Mr. Abdoulie Saho, on Friday said that, the two hyenas that escaped from the Abuko Nature Reserve on Thursday, between 2am and 6am, had been found.
He confirmed to Mansa Banko Online that, the hyena that was found around Tabokoto was seriously beaten and couldn’t survive due to the injuries it had sustained. The other hyena, he continued, was tracked at the mangroves at Faji Kunda and it’s now at the main enclosure.
“We were informed that the hyenas escaped, this was around dawn. Two of our staff went to track them and managed to bring the one seen at Tabokoto end which was seriously beaten, and as a result, it could not survive. The other one found at the mangroves is at the main enclosure waiting to be caged,’’ Saho explained in an interview with this medium.
On how the hyenas managed to escape from their caged, the Senior Wildlife Conservation Officer said they escaped when their original cage was being repaired and moved to the hyena enclosure.
He added that they used their teeth to bite the cage as they have powerful teeth.
He went on: “Originally, it was six of them but they were within the main enclosure when they escaped, as we have many enclosures here and the outside perimeter fence. So, it is not very easy for animals to get out of here. “As you know, they are wild animals; that is why we put this big fence so that we can contain them.’’
Saho further stated that prior to the escape of the hyenas through, probably, the construction side, they had tried to lure them so as to have them back to their cage but to no avail, as they did not want to kill them.
He advised that there should be no cause for alarm anymore, because the hyena is now under control.
