At its 32nd Session in July 2016, the Committee on Fisheries requested a feasibility study on the proposal of the Government of the Republic of Korea to establish a World Fisheries University under the auspices of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. As a result, FAO and the Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans of the Republic of Korea signed a Memorandum of Understanding in May 2019 on a Pilot Programme for the FAO World Fisheries University.
One of the objectives of the FAO World Fisheries University Pilot Programme is to provide education on the fisheries industry and science to contribute to the enhancement of fisheries resources, fisheries, aquaculture and fisheries economics and policies. The World Fisheries University will be hosted in Pukyong National University located in Busan, Republic of Korea.
Thirty participants from developing countries will be selected to participate in the 18-month Pilot Programme which will start in March 2020. Expenses of the students will be fully covered. Students who complete successfully the academic programme will obtain a Master in Science in Fisheries.
Please find enclosed the description of the Pilot Programme of the World Fisheries University, as well as the eligibility criteria for candidates. These documents are available only in English, as the courses and examinations will be carried out in English, and a mandatory selection requirement for participants in the programme is a solid command of English.
In order to attract a wide range of qualified participants, Members are kindly requested to distribute this information within their national institutions, ministries, educational and professional institutes etc.
