On Friday, 12 June 2026, the Border Patrol Unit (BPU) of the Gambia Immigration Department (GID), operating under the Migration Management Unit (MMU) in Tanji, successfully intercepted forty-seven (47) individuals attempting irregular migration in Bafuloto Village.
The group comprised twenty-eight (28) Senegalese nationals, seventeen (17) Gambians, and two (2) Guineans. Among them were thirty-nine (39) males, five (5) females, and three (3) minors.
This operation highlights the persistent efforts of migrant smugglers to circumvent law enforcement by shifting their activities to hinterland communities and less-monitored areas.
The Gambia Immigration Department remains resolute in its mission to combat irregular migration and dismantle smuggling networks that exploit the country as a transit hub for perilous journeys to the Canary Islands. The Department reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding lives and protecting vulnerable youths from embarking on dangerous migration routes that too often end in tragedy.
