In a decisive move to modernize its operations, the Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has announced a temporary suspension of all national document issuance and enrollment services, including National ID Cards, Non-Gambian ID Cards, Residence Permits, and Alien Cards.
The suspension, effective from 10 June to 29 June 2026, comes as the Department undertakes a major synchronization of its existing database with the newly introduced MARGIN system. Officials say the upgrade is designed to improve efficiency, strengthen accuracy, and simplify verification processes for citizens and residents alike.
“This measure is not just a pause, but a step forward,” explained Inspector Sulayman Sambou, Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GID. “By aligning our systems with MARGIN, we are laying the foundation for faster, more reliable, and more secure immigration and identification services.”
The announcement follows a directive from the Office of the President issued on 9 June 2026, underscoring the government’s commitment to digital transformation and enhanced public service delivery.
During the suspension period, enrollment officers across the country have been instructed to halt all processing activities until services resume at the end of June. While the temporary halt may cause inconvenience, the Department has appealed for public patience and understanding, assuring that the long-term benefits will outweigh the short-term disruption.
The GID reiterated its dedication to serving the Gambian people with integrity and efficiency, promising that once the upgrade is complete, citizens will experience smoother, more secure access to essential identification documents.
