Senegalese authorities launched a manhunt in Dakar after a large wooden fishing boat carrying undocumented migrants landed at the Soumbedioune beach early Tuesday morning.
Police reported that the vessel, known locally as a pirogue, had departed from The Gambia with around 165 passengers on board, including women and minors. Chaos erupted when officers arrived at the shore, with many migrants scattering into nearby streets. Security forces managed to arrest 72 individuals, while dozens more are believed to have escaped.
The incident highlights the growing crisis of irregular migration across West Africa. Just weeks earlier, Ebrima Drammeh, widely known as โEbrima Migrant Situation,โ a Gambian migration activist revealed alarming figures: 131 Gambian migrants died and 254 went missing in the first four months of 2026 alone. His report underscored the deadly scale of the โbackwayโ route โ the perilous journey many young Gambians take in hopes of reaching Europe.
Authorities in Senegal say investigations are ongoing to track down those who fled, while regional leaders continue to face mounting pressure to address the humanitarian and security challenges posed by mass migration.
